A new musical based on the life and songs of Cuban singer Celia Cruz and performed in Spanish!
Celia is the story of an artist's love for her country revealed through a musical life that spans for more than 60 years. Throughout her career, Cruz faces constant successes as well as challenges. As a young woman, she defies her father's opposition to become a singer and conspires with her mother to accomplish her dream. As her fame increases, so does the price of her success. She shares her victories and disillusions with the love of her life, Pedro Knight, and dreams of one day returning to her country. However, that dream is challenged when she is denied a visa to visit her dying mother, and then realizes that she may never again return to her beloved Cuba.
All performances of Celia, aside from the Saturday at 5pm performance and the Sunday at 7pm performance, will be performed in Spanish.

The New York Salsa scene will never be the same. This past Wednesday, September 12th 2007, El Pikete, the Hot new Cuban Timba band from Miami and SonSublime, New York’s Legendary Charanga band, matched up for the Battle of the Cuban Bands and brought down the house at LQ’s Legends of Salsa Night. This fiery confrontation between these two distinct musical styles which originate from the Son Cubano, a musical danceable style developed in Cuba in the early part of the nineteenth century and which is also the basis of today’s popular Salsa music, proved to be a show stopper. The audience was mesmerized by El Pikete’s fresh new highly charged danceable sound and performance; fresh from Cuba, most of the band’s members are here in the U.S. only a few years and two are here less than six months. Although young, most in their twenties, these are seasoned musicians, most of them having been members of, and traveled the globe with, the legendary Manolin, El Doctor de La Salsa’s band in Cuba. They’ve brought with them the best from Cuba’s current musical generation, which by the way, is very well known to audiences worldwide, with mega performers like Los Van Van, Maraca and Manolito Y Su Trabuco giving world class sold-out concerts worldwide. El Pikete performed first and opened the show with a cover of Llego La Música Cubana (Cuban Music Has Arrived) a tune by Manolito Y Su Trabuco. Michel (male lead vocals) and Hany (sultry female lead vocals) and the other talented members (Alexis “Mipa” Cuesta, Congas, Director; Pepito Montes, Piano; Jeans Valdez, Sax, Arranger & Composer; Victoriano Napoles, Bass; José, Timbal; Jorge Carlos, Violin, Arranger & Composer; El Niche, Trumpet) delivered their performance with a Havana streetwise Descarga/Rap/Dance youthful flair that left no doubt in the minds of anyone present that this band is of superstar caliber. They also performed several of their own numbers including Este Es Mi Tumbao (loosely translated means, This Is My Beat/Rhythm) and their Miami radio and T.V. hit single Seco Y Guardao (again, loosely translated, Dried Out and Reserved). These two numbers have also been playing on Vicki Sola’s famed Saturday afternoon program, Que Viva La Música on 89.1 FM New York for the past two weeks. Locos Por Mi Habana, another Manolito Y Su Trabuco song, was the closing number. It left the audience clapping and screaming, “Cuba – Cuba, Otra – Otra!” (“Cuba-Cuba, Encore – Encore!”). All-in-all a stellar New York premiere performance for El Pikete and a hard act to follow – no doubt that we’ll be seeing and hearing more of them. A hard act to follow – yes, but SonSublime was the perfect match with their exquisite traditional music flair showing that the old timers had it right from the start. SonSublime came out fighting with their sweet blend of flute, strings, voices in unison and the irresistible percussion section that together characterize the Cuban Charanga. A long time New York favorite, SonSublime has performed in all the major night clubs in and around the city, nationally and abroad. Band leader Jesse Herrero originally founded the band in 1975 as Sublime and produced such hits as Masitas de Pollo and Coqueta. Although the orchestra’s name may have changed a little, their commitment to playing the classic styles of Danzon, Cha-Cha-Cha and Son remains steadfast. Young and mature dancers alike continue to enjoy their fresh, robust renditions of the classics as well as original works. SonSublime has 4 CDs under their belt, 3 are considered classics, they are Simplemente (1995, recorded as Sublime before they changed the name of the band to SonSublime), Irresistible (2001), Gran Reserva (2002) and their latest recording, already a standard on dance floors, Bailando Con SonSublime (2006, Dancing With SonSublime). They began with Mueve La Cintura, with Connie Grossman “The Pied Piper” of SonSublime delivering her masterful melodic improvisations on the par with Cuban legendary masters such as José Antonio Fajardo of José Fajardo y su Orquesta and Richard Egües of the Original Orquesta Aragón, who she studied with while in Cuba and is her idol and mentor. Dancers were delighted by such favorites as Matilde, Mi Chiquita Quiere Más, Yolanda and Me Dieron La Clave. The violin solos by Mike Perez and Ali Bello were superb, providing the accents and highlights dancers rely on as inspiration for their moves and steps. Well known composer and arranger Gil Suarez on piano, Willy Cintron (Bass), Joe Gonzalez (Congas) and Manuel Rivera (Timbales, Bongos) provided the enticing hypnotic and harmonic percussion and bass line. On top of everything were Jesse Herrero and Gilberto Velasquez on vocals, singing the wonderful stories and tales that are so much a part of and typify Cuban Charanga music. Just before the end of SonSublime’s performance, the piano and trumpet players from El Pikete, not being able to resist the temptation, joined in for jamming solos with SonSublime. The audience cheered as the traditional and the contemporary embraced in an unforgettable celebration of Cuban music, and knowing that the writing is on the wall for Cuban–American relations that the time for change is at hand. The Battle of the Cuban Bands at LQ, New York’s premier night club, is already being talked about and will surely be remembered for years to come as a pivotal milestone in Latin music. SUNDAY JULY 20th, 2008 - FROM 2PM TO 9PM LA FIESTA DEL MAMONCILLO 38 years in the U.S., but remarkably, La Fiesta Del Mamoncillo goes back over 70 years to the 1930's in Havana Cuba. On Sundays Cubans in La Habana would gather together in Los Jardines de la Tropical to dance. The dance was given in a park that had lots of mamoncillo trees in it - some other cultures call them quenepas or limoncillos or just plain mamon. The dance was open to everyone but was mostly attended by Afro-Cubans, because back then, in Cuba, there was a club for the white and mulatto Cubans and another club for the black Cubans. El Club Cubano Interamericano, which was started by mainly Afro-Cubans around 1970, continued that tradition here in the U.S. and 38 years later, they are still going strong. Come join us for this outdoor traditional festive celebration of Cuban music, dance and authentic cuisine. It’s truly a special and unique event!

Juan de Marcos & The Afro-Cuban All-Stars 38 U.S. City Concert Tour February - April 2009 |
|
“A secret satellite. A flying piano. A Cuban maestro who combines the musical sixth sense of Quincy Jones with the international savvy of James Bond. These are the stories behind the U.S. return of Cuban music after half a decade, thanks to the Juan de Marcos & The Afro-Cuban All-Stars national tour, which is bringing Cuba’s unique, addictive sounds to 38 cities including Berkeley, Chicago, Cincinnati , Dallas, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, New York , Seattle, Tampa, and Washington, among dozens in between.
The man behind the Buena Vista Social Club, Cuban bandleader, producer, and impresario extraordinaire Juan de Marcos, has been forced to lay low on the American circuit since 2002, when politics slammed the door in the face of some of Latin music’s most adored artists. “We used to perform in the U.S. every year starting in 1994, when I went for the first time with my group, Sierra Maestra. We toured the whole country. Then musicians from Buena Vista started to tour, with great success and their own bands we put together, for many years. But in 2003, everything stopped.” - Rock Paper Scissors
