Son De La Calle
Nelson Rodriguez, the leader of Son De La Calle, started playing the guitar at the age of 16 while in the Cuban military. After leaving the military, he attended Amadeo Roldan Conservatory in Havana where he studied music theory.
Within a year, he became a well known lead guitarist. He quickly acquired a reputation for having an original style with a lot of passion to his music. He joined many different bands such as Perform Dansa and Aires de España. He performed at many places such as Gran Teatro de la Habana and Las Bulerias. These bands toured frequently to other provinces of Cuba such as Santiago de Cuba and Sti Spiritus. Their performances were a great success and were played on Radio CoCo FM. Nelson also performed with Cafe Con K at places like Morro Cabaña, El Cochinito and La UNEAC. In addition to his live performances, he also worked as a studio musician for rock bands such as La Otra Esquina and Kristian y Maikel.
He met Luis Gallardo (singer) and Maikel Tabarez (timbal player) and together formed Son De La Calle and worked in the resorts in Varadero. The band became sensationally popular among tourists and Cubans as they performed places like Hotel Internacional de Varadero, Playa de Oro and Hotel 4 Palmas. He moved to NYC in 2008 and worked with various groups/musicians such as Super Brothers (Mariachi,Bachata), Eskarioka (Ska), Roberto Poveda (Cuban music), Trio Quimbombo (Cuban music), David Sklar (Rock/Pop), Sanjay (Indian/Latin Fusion).
In November 2009, he met Latin Jazz guitarist, Justin Rothberg, percussionist, Antonio Hernandez, and funk/jazz/soul bassist, Jon Price and finally formed his own band: Son De La Calle. This band was similar to the one formed in Varadero except the music is more a mixture of timba, boleros, jazz, descarga, rumba and flamenco.
Because of the dynamic and uniqueness of their music, the new band is already growing a good reputation and performing at various venues.
