Yunior Terry Y Son de Altura

“If you want to hear the new sound of Latin Music in New York City this is your chance.  With Yunior Terry y Son de Altura you have the perfect blend of traditional and contemporary brought to you with the energy, excitement and the soul of Havana.  This is the kind of music that continues to put Cuban Music at the center of the Latin music map.”

-- Ed Castaneda, HavanaNewYork.com

Son de Altura puts on a dynamic show with their amazing blend of traditional Cuban music (Rumba, Son, Cha-cha-cha, Boleros) with Latin Jazz and Timba (modern day popular Cuban music). Created to innovate as well as preserve the legacy of Cuban music, Son de Altura consists of three generations of prestigious Cuban musicians whose professionalism and energy is, without a doubt, not to be missed!

Regarded as one of New York City's most sought after bass player, Yunior Terry is recognized for his big sound, versatility and contagious rhythm.  The youngest son of one of Cuba's most gifted musical families "Los Terry's," Yunior followed the family tradition and began his musical training at age seven, graduating in 1994 from the prestigious National School of Art (ENA) in Havana with a double major in violin and bass.  Soon after gradation he joined the National Philharmonic Orchestra performing works of European and Cuban composers at Havana's National Theater.  In 1998, he moved to California to attend the California Institute of Arts where he received his B.A. with honors in 2002.  It was at CalArts where he continued to expand his musical horizon under Charlie Haden, Derek Oles (Poland), Rajeev Taranath (India) and Alfred Ladzekpo (Ghana) by exposing him to a wide variety of music and traditions from around the world.  In 2009, Yunior Terry won the Van Lier Fellowship, awarded each year by Meet the Composer to active professionals supporting the creation of new musical work and engagement in the community.

Mr. Terry has performed with Steve Coleman, Jerry Gonzalez and Fort Apache, Lila Downs, Jeff Tain Watts, Eddie Palmieri, the late Hilton Ruiz, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Steve Turre, Dave Valentin, Jane Bunnett, his brother Yosvany Terry and many others.  Mr. Terry leads his own band "Son de Altura" which he created to innovate as well as preserve the legacy of Cuban music.
