La Nacional Presents:

Salsonera’s Party with,

Nu Guajiro

Nu Guajiro (formerly Mo’ Guajiro) struck its first chords in Brooklyn, NY in 1995, long before Buena Vista Social Club and the current influx of Son Montuno groups hit Manhattan. From the start, a tremendous love and respect for the great Septetos and Conjuntos of El Son (Cuban predecessor of Salsa) brought current co-leaders Aaron Halva (Iowa) and Jainardo Batista-Sterling (Puerto Rico) together in a great search for their own flavor of this music that continues today. Over the past 13 years they have had the honor of sharing the stage with Los Van Van, Ibrahim Ferrer and The Buena Vista Social Club, El Gran Combo, La Sonora Poncena, and Chucho Valdez among many others. They have toured the United States, Puerto Rico and Europe for private performances, festivals, radio and TV appearances. Nu means NEW. Guajiros are Cuban country folk. Considered by many as the premier Son group in New York, Nu Guajiro blends a profound respect for tradition with a healthy dose of funky innovation and the grit of 10 years on New York City Streets.

La Nacional opened in 1868 as the Benevolent Spanish Society, the restaurant/social club exudes an Old World charm matched by few Manhattan eateries. The utilitarian back room is the joint's heart, with an open kitchen and a more formal front dining room with its red walls and imposing wood furniture.

“There's a hint of the speakeasy at this social club that caters to the cravings of Spanish expats.” - NY Magazine
