Isa Alfonso was born in Morón, Cuba in 1972. She studied classic guitar in the Adolfo Guzmán Conservatory of Music in Havana. Upon graduation in 1990, she enrolled in the Master’s Degree program on Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Havana. At that time she began reading the great poets of Spanish-American literature and also took jazz lessons for guitar. This combination inspired her to write her first songs, influenced a great deal by great composers or trovadores from the Nueva Trova Movement such as Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Santiago Feliú y Donato Poveda. In 1995 she moved to Miami, where she started performing at different venues such as Hoy como Ayer, Paco’s Tavern, Centro Cultural Español, 190 Bistro, La Bodeguita del Medio, Clique Arts Café, Books and Books, Miami Literary Café and Tinta y Café. Isa has expanded her scope of influences to Brazilian, Jazz and World music while keeping sounds that owe to Cuban music intensely, enriching her melodies and musical style. She performed with Roberto Poveda and recorded on his Son Electrico CD. Isa is currently recording her first album with Ariel de la Portilla and Alex García, with whom she has formed a brand new New York band: Son Cuba.

“There's something about Isa Alfonso's voluminous voice that speaks of wisdom beyond her young years... Isa's got all the elements she needs to make audiences swoon with her soulful crooning of the heart and mind.”
