Bronx Week Presents:
Jose Conde y Ola Fresca Nonet
On the steps of the
Bronx, NY 10451
One of the busiest names at the head of the wave of a Cuban music renaissance in New York since the late 90’s has been Jose Conde y Ola Fresca. After 2 internationally acclaimed records, thousands performances in New York, and throughout the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Costa Rica, Jose Conde will be putting Ola Fresca to rest later this year in order to focus on his new solo project and record (nu Latin Groove) and other projects. The Bronx Week daytime show June 17 on the steps of the Bronx Courthouse will be the Ola Fresca swan song in New York and will feature 10 original members of Ola Fresca, most of which have released or have notable projects of their own started in the last few years. These musicians include Marvin Diz- Timbales, Roman Diaz- Congas, Jorge Bringas- Bass, Onel Mulet- Tenor sax, Rafi Malkiel- Trombone, Pablo Vergara- Piano, Pablo Moya- Tres, Elin– Vocal, and Jose Conde- Vocal. More of a concept than a steady band, Ola Fresca has made music for dancers combining elements of Cuban son and New York salsa with touches from Brazil, Colombia, American Funk etc. The show in the Bronx, sponsored by Lincoln Center, brings the fresh wave of Ola Fresca back to the roots of El Barrio, "para el bailador" - for the dancer. Get ready to Ride la Ola. Jose Conde glides the line between Latin heritage and American storyteller traditions sliding poetically from universal themes of nature’s beauty to personal expressions of romantic longing and loss. In two critically acclaimed Ola Fresca albums, Ay! Que Rico- 2004 (PiPiKi/Universal) and the award winning, (R)Evolución (Mr. Bongo Records UK), Conde has traversed Cuban son to Haitian compas, Puerto Rican bomba to New Orleans swamp–funk creating music which has been hailed the world over as "a brilliant and thrilling smorgasbord of sounds” (Billboard) that "keeps listeners in a diasporic daze” (Trace).
In the last couple years Conde has won Best Latin Album in the Independent Music Awards 2008 and performed in notable venues such as Chicago World Music Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, NY Central Park Summerstage, Bocafest in Veracruz Mexico, etc. and was the musical director, songwriter and singer for the Baby Loves Salsa cd currently out on Rope a Dope Records/Sony. Five Jose Conde songs from both his Ay! Que Rico and (R)Evolucion albums have been featured on international compilations on Putumayo and Rough Guide Records. Conde’s recent web song and widely seen video, Respondele a Obama, became an anthem of the US 2008 presidential campaign. Currently there is a new solo Latin funk production of 12 new Jose Conde songs in the works and slated for release in the Spring of 2010.
